Batam Enters Global Top 10 for Port Connectivity Growth: What It Means for Manufacturers and Investors

Batam Enters Global Top 10 for Port Connectivity Growth: What It Means for Manufacturers and Investors

Batam Is Becoming More Connected to Global Shipping Networks

Batam has long benefited from its strategic location near Singapore and the Strait of Malacca. But geography alone does not determine whether an industrial location works efficiently.

For manufacturers, exporters, and regional distributors, what matters is how easily goods can actually move between factories, ports, suppliers, and overseas markets.

New data suggests that Batam's maritime connectivity is improving significantly.

According to the latest UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Port Liner Shipping Connectivity Index data, updated on 28 September 2026, Batam Island is among the 10 ports recording the strongest growth in port liner shipping connectivity between Q3 2016 and Q3 2026. UNCTADstat

The Port Liner Shipping Connectivity Index, or PLSCI, measures how well an individual port is integrated into global liner shipping networks. It is therefore particularly relevant to companies whose operations depend on regular containerized imports and exports. UNCTADstat

That is an important distinction.

Batam is not the sixth-largest or sixth most-connected port in the world.

Instead, the recognition concerns the rate at which Batam's shipping connectivity has expanded over the last decade.

BP Batam reported on 29 September that, using the Q2 2016–Q2 2026 comparison, Batam ranked sixth among the ten ports showing the highest PLSCI growth. The newer Q3 2026 UNCTAD update continues to place Batam in the global top ten for decade-long connectivity growth. BP Batam

For businesses assessing Batam, the distinction is important—but so is the underlying trend.

Batam is becoming more integrated into international shipping networks.

What Does UNCTAD's Port Connectivity Index Actually Measure?

Shipping connectivity is more complex than simply counting containers.

UNCTAD's liner shipping connectivity framework considers factors including shipping services, shipping companies, deployed capacity, vessel size, ship calls, and the number of countries that can be reached through direct liner shipping connections. UNCTAD separately publishes its port-level PLSCI to measure connectivity for individual ports. UNCTADstat

A rising index can therefore indicate that businesses operating around a port have access to an increasingly developed international shipping network.

This does not automatically guarantee lower logistics costs for every company. Freight rates still depend on factors such as cargo type, destination, contract terms, volume, carrier capacity, and global market conditions.

But better connectivity can expand the options available to shippers.

And at Batu Ampar, that trend is increasingly visible in actual vessel activity.

Batu Ampar Direct Calls Jumped 212%

One of the clearest signs of Batam's improving international connectivity can be seen at Batu Ampar Container Terminal.

Between January and May 2026, international direct calls to the terminal reached 106 vessel calls, compared with only 34 calls during the same period in 2025.

That represents an increase of approximately 212% year on year. Batamport

Container volume handled through those international direct-call services also rose sharply.

Direct-call container traffic reached 58,237 TEUs during January–May 2026, compared with 25,904 TEUs during the same period one year earlier—an increase of approximately 125%. Batamport

This growth matters because direct shipping services can reduce reliance on additional feeder or transshipment movements.

For companies operating factories in Batam, the practical question is no longer simply:

“Is Batam close to Singapore?”

The more relevant question is becoming:

“Which overseas markets can now be reached directly from Batam?”

Four Major Shipping Lines Are Supporting Direct Connectivity

Batam's direct-call network has also become more diversified.

During January–May 2026, international direct services at Batu Ampar were operated by:

SITC — 55 calls / 32,266 TEUs
Evergreen — 30 calls / 14,792 TEUs
Samudera — 11 calls / 7,103 TEUs
COSCO Shipping — 10 calls / 4,077 TEUs

In comparison, direct international services during the same period of 2025 were served only by SITC and Evergreen. Batamport

The addition of shipping operators can be important for industrial companies because more carrier options may improve routing flexibility and reduce dependence on a single shipping service.

It also indicates that carriers themselves are responding to growing cargo demand and infrastructure improvements around Batam.

Batam Is Now Directly Linked to Major Asian Ports

According to BP Batam, international direct services from Batu Ampar now connect Batam with ports across at least seven Asian countries. Batamport

The network includes major destinations such as Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Nansha, Yangpu and Qinzhou in China; Haiphong and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam; Port Klang, Kuantan, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching in Malaysia; Singapore; Laem Chabang in Thailand; Sihanoukville in Cambodia; and Yangon in Myanmar. Batamport

For manufacturers, this is particularly relevant.

A factory location cannot be evaluated only by land price, labour availability, or tax incentives. Logistics routes can significantly affect inventory planning, lead times, procurement strategies, and ultimately the competitiveness of exported goods.

The expansion of Batam's direct shipping network therefore strengthens one part of the island's investment proposition: regional market access.

Container Traffic Continued Growing Through August 2026

The momentum has continued beyond the January–May direct-call figures.

Across cargo ports managed by BP Batam, container throughput reached 542,927 TEUs between January and August 2026, representing growth of 8.2% year on year.

General cargo reached approximately 8.17 million tonnes, up 8% year on year. BP Batam

Batu Ampar remains the largest contributor to container handling.

The terminal recorded approximately 467,617 TEUs during January–August 2026, along with 1.376 million tonnes of non-containerized cargo. Batamport

These figures provide a useful complement to the UNCTAD connectivity ranking.

The global index shows the structural improvement in Batam's shipping network over the longer term, while local port statistics show that Batam is also handling growing volumes today.

Batu Ampar Is Being Modernized

Port connectivity does not grow through shipping routes alone.

Terminal capacity and operational performance also matter.

BP Batam reports that the transformation of Batu Ampar Container Terminal has been supported by approximately US$85 million in investment, covering equipment modernization, container-yard development, terminal capacity improvements and digitalization of port operations. Batamport

The modernization effort is intended to enable Batu Ampar to handle growing cargo volumes more efficiently while strengthening its ability to attract international shipping services.

BP Batam has also reported increased direct-call frequencies using vessels with capacities of approximately 1,200–2,000 TEUs, reflecting greater activity on international routes. Batamport

The combination is important:

better terminal infrastructure + more shipping lines + more direct routes + higher cargo volumes.

Together, these factors help explain why Batam's international shipping connectivity has grown so strongly over the past decade.

What Could This Mean for Manufacturers in Batam?

For industrial companies, port connectivity affects much more than freight forwarding.

Consider a manufacturer importing components from China, processing or assembling them in Batam, and exporting finished products to other Asian markets.

Every unnecessary transshipment can introduce additional handling, scheduling dependencies and potential delays.

A stronger direct-call network does not eliminate these risks, but it can create alternative routing options.

For companies considering Batam for electronics, precision engineering, machinery, marine, energy, medical devices, consumer products or other export-oriented manufacturing activities, this means port connectivity should increasingly be included in site-selection calculations.

The potential impact can extend across procurement lead times, inventory levels, regional distribution, export scheduling and supply-chain resilience.

That is why Batam's latest UNCTAD recognition is more than a headline.

It reflects a logistics ecosystem that is becoming more connected to regional trade flows.

A Logistics Advantage Does Not Eliminate Market-Entry Complexity

Better infrastructure can make Batam more attractive, but foreign companies still need to establish the right operating structure before taking advantage of it.

A company considering Batam needs to assess questions such as:

What business activities will be conducted in Indonesia? Which KBLI classifications and business licences are required? Should the business establish a local company, operate through a distributor, or use another market-entry structure? Will products require additional registrations or sector-specific approvals? How will employees, expatriates, payroll, immigration and compliance be managed? And which customs, import, export or operational requirements apply to the proposed supply chain?

These questions should be addressed before a company commits significant capital to a facility or supply-chain arrangement.

A strong logistics location is valuable.

But the right legal, licensing and operational structure determines whether a company can actually use that location efficiently.

Batam's Competitive Position Is Becoming More Than Geography

For decades, Batam's investment story has been built around its proximity to Singapore.

That advantage remains.

But the island's proposition is gradually becoming broader.

UNCTAD's latest data shows Batam among the world's fastest-growing ports for liner shipping connectivity over the past decade. Batu Ampar is attracting more international direct calls. More shipping lines are participating. Container traffic is growing. Terminal infrastructure is being upgraded. UNCTADstat

The result is a more interesting question for foreign manufacturers:

Could Batam become not only a production location near Singapore, but also a more direct gateway to Asian supply chains?

For businesses evaluating Indonesia as part of a China+1, ASEAN expansion, regional manufacturing or supply-chain diversification strategy, that is a question worth examining carefully.
